TRADITIONAL TEXTILE ART AND EXPERIMENTAL BATIK

Teacher – Zygmunt Łukasiewicz
Assistant – Anna Hlebowicz

TRADITIONAL TEXTILE ART AND EXPERIMENTAL BATIK

The programme of the workshop is addressed to those who wish to learn traditional weaving techniques through which identity is created. To those who wish to explore the possibilities of combining different fabrics, creating works made of new generation yarns or textile waste. To those who are searching for new quality and meaning, who want to discover emotions in the process of hand weaving and their effects on the final result. The aim of the course leaders is to encourage participants to play with ideas and form, to motivate them to experiment and stay open to innovations. Depending on their level of advancement, course participants will be able to use weaving frames, harness looms and tapestry looms.
Batik is an ancient Indonesian technique of wax-resist dyeing of textiles. The word ‘batik’ means simply ‘to dot’ and it refers to applying wax drops on a textile. The island of Java is the home of batik. It is a technique which has fascinated artists and craftsmen for centuries. In Poland the interest in the original, Javan batik first appeared at the beginning of the 20th century and is still present today.

In the proposed experimental version, the wax may be also applied by a metal pen, brush, stick, stamp or stencil. Batik will be painted freely with brushes of different width, on various supports, such as cotton, linen, paper or wood. It is a fully painterly technique which allows to create two-sided works. The light underlines the transparency of the painting and for this reason this technique can be used to create objects of applied arts, such as lamp shades, curtains, roller-blinds, etc.
During the course the artistic output of two important artists – Władyslaw Strzemiński and Katarzyna Kobro will be presented and their work may become a source of inspiration both for textile art and for batik compositions.
