Teacher – Paweł Kwiatkowski

COLLAGRAPHY, RELIEF PRINT AND SILKSCREEN

The programme of the course is addressed to experienced artists and to people just beginning their work in the field of printmaking. It includes two basic techniques: collagraphy and serigraphy, which – according to the artistic intentions of course participants – may be accompanied by relief techniques, drypoint, monotype or stencil. Its important quality is a wide spectrum of offered techniques and the possibility to adjust them to the sensitivity, imagination and creative ideas of each participant.
Both collagraphy and serigraphy offer virtually unlimited possibilities of formal and stylistic experiments. The combination of both techniques allows one to go beyond the standards typically associated with printmaking and to express the artist’s own artistic taste in character with the aesthetics of today.
Collagraphy, a surface-printing process, is a relatively new technique. Thanks to a wide range of materials and tools possible to use, as well as to the variety of surfaces and ways of applying substances on them it opens limitless possibilities of creating an image. Two collagraphic methods are included within the course – the use of cardboard matrices or matrices made of PET foil.
The screen printing technique has its origins in stencil printing techniques used in the Far East for thousands of years. It was first recognized as art technique in the 20th century thanks to such artists as Robert Rauschenberg and Andy Warhol. During the course it will be possible to create prints with the use of the photochemical method (using photographs).
During the course participants’ drawings, paintings or photos will be a starting point of course works. They should be prepared beforehand as they will be discussed during the first course meeting and they will determine the choice of the technique and further progress. Participants will be provided with all necessary workshop equipment and professional technical and artistic support. The expected result of the course is the creation of stylistically original and technically correct graphic works which will bring full satisfaction to the authors, but also to the course leaders.
