Why Łódź? / Why Poland?

Łódź is the third largest city in Poland, situated in the heart of the country. For almost 200 years Łódź has been an important European textile centre. In the 19th century dozens of textile factories contributed to the socio - economic development of the city. This powerful tradition gave rise to intensive artistic and educational activity especially at the Faculty of Textile and Fashion of the Strzemiński Academy of Fine Arts Łódź. The Central Museum of Textile, an institution unique on a world-scale, vigorously operating in Łódź since the 1970’s, has been upholding the memory of the great Polish tradition in that field and of the outstanding international personalities of textile art. Łódź is also famous for its avant-garde art - it is the city of Strzemiński and Kobro, but also many other outstanding artists whose achievements are fostered by the Museum of Art.

The City Art Gallery is the organizer of the prestigious International Triennial of Small Graphic Forms Lodz. Other significant institutions in Łódź include the world-famous Film School and and the unique Book Art Museum.

The Strzemiński Academy of Fine Arts Łódź established in 1945 is one of eight artistic higher education institutions in Poland. It has a remarkable tradition of educating students in the fields of textile art, printmaking, comics and graphic design. For many years it has been an important point of reference for all who wish to work in these fields in Poland and abroad. These are the main reasons why the International Summer Courses Printmaking and Textile Art PATA Łódź have attracted artists and art enthusiasts from all over the world for the past seven years.

Lodz, the former textile industry empire, today is a city of modern technologies, creative enterprises and grand events. It is a metropolis where a landscape of industrial architecture mixes with silhouettes of office buildings, production halls, culture and sports buildings.

A small settlement, that in 1423 was granted civic rights, was thriving at the beginning of the 19th century. Lodz became one of the Europe`s biggest and fastest growing textile industry centre. At that time, a new identity of the city - "a promised land" and "a city of many cultures" was created. In Lodz people of different nationalities and religions shared the same dream of a success. Despite the differences they were able to build the city together.

Finally, Łódź is a city of festivals and thousands of charming clubs, cafes and premises. Throughout the year, events take place in the urban space that attract thousands of people who are hungry for culture and valuable entertainment at a high level. In the rich offer of Łódź theaters, museums, galleries, cultural centers, cinemas and clubs, everyone will find something for themselves.
