GRAPHIC DESIGN: NEWSPAPER / ZINE AND BOOK ART
10° Course: AUGUST 8 - 20, 2017

Prof. Sławomir Kosmynka - Head of the Editorial and Digital Media Typography Design Studio
Assistant: Bartek Smoczyński

The idea behind the course is to continue the tradition of functional print, typographic Łódź avant - garde and the motto “word is picture” coined by the patron of the Academy, Władysław Strzemiński, and to carry on the unique programme of the Editorial Design Studio developed by Krzysztof Lenk based on structural design.
The aim of the workshop is to compile contents of a personal newspaper, magazine/zine/or artist’s book, to develop its graphic and editorial aspects and finally to publish 1 or 2 copies of the work. The self - edited newspaper, zine or artist’s book becomes a medium of authorial expression. A folded poster is a separate element of the project – it is a hybrid form combining features of a flat and spatial form.
The task is based mainly on manual lay - out, expressive typography, collage and illustration. The practical part will be preceded by a lecture devoted to both, presentation of examples of students’ works realized in the studio and the analysis of the relationship between text and image, basic rules of page ordering, grid and composition of periodicals. The two week long course will result in creating complex and simple graphic and typographic editorial concepts.
All participants should have basic experience in working with the platform ADOBE/ Photoshop, Indesign, Illustrator, Acrobat/. A laptop with Adobe + Adobe Type Kit software is required.
